Parking Before and After School

There have been several concerns raised after school where students have nearly been hit by motorists outside the school on Duff Parade. Please note we have been contacted by Corrimal Police and they have informed us that they will be sending out random patrols to monitor the situation. They are particularly interested in motorists who are exceeding the 40 km speed limit and people who are parking illegally.
If you do pick up your child on Duff Parade please be vigilant and watch for students who are exiting in that area.

School Uniform

At present we are experiencing variable weather conditions, one day 40 degrees, the next day 20 degrees. With these huge shifts of weather patterns please pack a jumper in your child’s bag in the event of a sudden cold snap. Likewise please ensure your child wears a hat to school every day and on particularly hot days the wearing of sun protection is encouraged.

"Tears & Tissues" - Thank you

Thank you to the large number of new parents who were able to attend our information meeting. It was great to see so many new faces who were interested to learn more about the “nuts and bolts” regarding the running of our school.

It is vital that new parents ask questions regarding routines and activities that occur at our school.

Please remember if in doubt do not hesitate to ask either your child’s teacher, the front office or myself and we will hopefully be able to allay any fears or problems you may be experiencing.
A special thank you to Sharon, Jodie, Jenny and Linda who were present to lead and co-ordinate this meeting.

Swimming Carnival Results

The school swimming carnival was held last Thursday. Well done to all students who swam in races. The winning house was Wiriga (302) followed by Iluka (294), Euroka (259) and Melinga (254).

Thank you also to the parents who assisted with the carnival on the day. Students who received a ribbon on Tuesday’s Swimming Presentation Assembly qualify for the Brokers Carnival on Friday 27th February, 2009 at Corrimal Pool. Information and permission notes will be distributed this week.

P&C Meeting

Last Tuesday we had our first P & C Meeting for the year and it was very well attended. Thank you to the many parents who attended on the night and I look forward to working with you in the year ahead.

The AGM will be held next month – (10th March) and there will be some vacancies that you may wish to take advantage of.

Thank you everyone

Thank you to everyone involved in our recent “Meet the Teacher” night. It provided a great opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and receive some valuable information regarding the year ahead. Its success is also testimony to the very hard work of our staff who were all prepared and communicated in a very professional fashion. 

Communication in general is very important. To be successful we need to ensure that all members of the school community have an opportunity to have input and a strong understanding of the processes that occur at Corrimal East Public School 

A special mention to our front office staff who often have to wear many different hats in the normal working day. They have dealt with the many and varied requests that occur in a professional and amicable fashion.

"Tea & Tissues" Morning Tea

A morning tea will be held in the hall on Wednesday 11th February for parents, grandparents and carers of Kindergarten children.

 This is an opportunity to meet other Kindergarten parents and find out more information about our school.

Tea and coffee will be provided, as well as the tissues for the tears shed as your “big” boy or girl has started school!

Scripture in 2009

Scripture is held for all students on a Thursday from 9.00am to 9.45am. Scripture lessons are provided in Catholic and Protestant (ie non-catholic) groups. 

These lessons deal with such aspects as values, caring for each other and the development of responsibilities.

The non-scripture group is for those students whose religious beliefs preclude them from attending Scripture. Schoolwork or lessons on values will be provided during this time.

School Fees

There are NO school fees at Corrimal East Public School.
However we do seek parent support for our fund-raisers which are held at regular intervals throughout the year.

Emergency Contact Forms

The Emergency Contact Forms will be distributed shortly. A separate sheet must be completed for each child. This information is our first reference point for contact with parents in case of an accident or emergency. 

It is important that the information we have is up to date and accurate. Please complete these forms as soon as you can and return them to your child’s teacher.

If this information changes during the year, don’t forget to inform the school.

Student Permisson Notes

This week we will be sending home a sheet with permission notes for events that will occur regularly throughout the year. I have put all these notes on one sheet to make it easier for parents to complete and return to school. A copy of the Computer Policy and Computer Contract is also included.

A Warm Welcome

Welcome back to the school year, it is great to see so many friendly faces and everybody looking to the new school year with enthusiasm.

A special welcome to our new Kindergarten students and their collective families. We are a proud school and we look forward to working with you to achieve the best possible learning outcomes for your children in the years ahead.

Also a special welcome to other new families who have enrolled at our school. I look forward to meeting you in person in the very near future.

Our school attempts to be very transparent in relation to communication. We have a school Website which is regularly updated, and of course , the Carooma ( our school newsletter).

Another opportunity is by attending one of our P & C meetings. They are currently held on the second Tuesday of each month.our first P & C meeting for 2009 will be held on Tuesday 10th February at 7 pm.

TEXTBOOKS for 2009
This year classes will be using three textbooks to enhance the educational programs taught at the school. The students have already commenced using these books to allow teaching programs to begin as soon as possible. The textbooks we will be using are as follows:
o Spelling Rules
o Mighty Mentals
o Milestones in Mathematics – Student Portfolio
The total of the textbooks will be $30.00

We are requesting that payment for the textbooks be paid by FRIDAY 20th FEBRUARY. Please enclose $30.00 in an envelope with our child’s name and class. If you require a payment plan it can be arranged through the front office.

Raising the school leaving age

"On 28 January 2009, the Premier of New South Wales announced that from 1 January 2010, students in NSW will be required to remain at school until the end of Year 10; and after completing Year 10, students will be required to remain in some form of education, training or employment until they turn 17."

2009 School Starting Dates

In light of significant progress in negotiations with the DET, the NSW Teachers Federation have determined not to proceed with the 48 hour industrial action at the start of the 2009 school year.

The following information was correct as of 21st of January 2009.

CONGRATULATIONS MIKAYLA

Congratulations to our state champion, Mikayla , who came first in the state in not one event but in two events, a fantastic achievement!
Mikayla came first in the 200metres event and first in the Long Jump event.
In the Long jump event Mikayla jumped an amazing distance of 4.33m.
We have a photo of Mikayla proudly showing off her two gold medals on the front of our school’s website.

School Holidays: 29th of September to the 10th of October.

Students return to school on Monday the 13th of October.

National Literacy and Numeracy Week: 1 - 7 Sept 2008

This year’s theme - Partnerships in Learning - acknowledges the strong bond that schools have with parents and communities when it comes to teaching literacy and numeracy to our children.
It is the most rewarding of partnerships because it sets our children up for life.
We’re achieving great results in literacy and numeracy in NSW, and this week allows our schools and students to take pride in their achievements and aim even higher.
The NSW National Literacy and Numeracy Week website shows short videos that explain how we are improving student results in literacy and numeracy, and how we measure student performance. These videos are available from 1 September at with the opportunity to participate in forums with experts.
One particular video - What is NAPLAN? - provides a good explanation of the new national assessment program. Translations of the transcript are available in audio and written form on the website, in Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese.
A range of parent/carer support booklets is available that help build children’s literacy and numeracy skills. These are also translated into six languages other than English.
There is also a Kids’ Link where children can build on their literacy and numeracy skills using secure websites.
National Literacy and Numeracy Week is a chance for everyone to get involved and tell our students and teachers what a great job they’re doing.
